"Διαφορετικότητα", othering, diversity και differentness.
"Judy Singer (1998/2016), who is generally accepted to have coined the term “neurodiversity,” asked:
“Why not appropriate metaphors based on biodiversity, for instance, to advance the causes of people with disabilities? Why not propose that just as biodiversity is essential for system stability, so neurodiversity may be essential for cultural stability? Why not strategically argue that the nurturing of neurodiversity gives society a repository of types who may come into their own under unforseeable circumstances…”
Thus, the term “neurodiversity” itself refers to the diversity of human brains and minds, while the paradigm of neurodiversity starts with the assumption that there is value in this human neurodiversity. Deviation from what is “normal” or “normative” is not bad, but good. For further details on this terminology, I would refer to Nick Walker’s blog post on the subject."

"When we refer to someone as "the other" and not "one of us," we establish a social, relational, psychological, and emotional distance that justifies crossing boundaries that would not be permitted within our group."

"Neurodiversity terminology & chronology
Neurotypical(ilty) = the condition from which neurodivergent people diverge from neuronormativity (Autism Network International newsletter in 1992/1993).
Neurodiversity = the diversity of brains, and body-minds. A property of groups (Blume; Singer, 1998).
Neurodivergent(ence) = individual body-minds that function in ways that diverge from ideals of neurotypicality (Kassiane Asasumasu, 1999/2000).
Neurominority = group who share the same divergence (e.g. Autistic; dyslexic; voice-hearer; etc.; Nick Walker).
To neuroqueer/be neuroqueer = to distort the performance of neuronormativity & heteronormativity (Nick Walker; Athena Michaels-Dillon; Remi Yergeau, 2008)." ALT TEXT ENDS

Για το Neurodiversity Movement, από την ίδια την Judy Singer, από το άρθρο https://www.forbes.com/sites/drnancydoyle/2021/10/14/neurodiversity-is-not-a-pollyanna-concept-judy-singer-says-get-realistic/?sh=320a31d66f02
“It’s worth pointing out that I coined Neurodiversity for just two things – to add to the categories of intersectional analysis and to suggest a “Politics of Neurodiversity” i.e. an umbrella/ banner for the emerging online Autistic Self-advocacy Movement, which was beginning to attract “Cousins” - other neurological minorities with similar issues. I saw the movement’s aspirations as seeking recognition, an end to discrimination and abuse, civil rights and appropriate services. I don’t recall any hyped-up claims about super-powers in the online groups I participated in. People were frank about their frustrations and challenges. Nor was I dreaming of making “the Workplace” more productive and efficient, but of making all our institutions more humane, not just in the work years, but from cradle to grave. We are already way over-productive to the detriment of the environment. Nor has “efficiency” shortened working hours, increased wages or given families more time and leisure together."
"To every action there is a reaction. Thus, in the life cycle of every movement, there is inevitable backlash, both from polarization within the movement and from its opponents who feel displaced from the status quo. Eventually the dust of battle settles, and the movement either becomes mainstream or gradually declines into a fringe cult. All life is an experiment, and every one of us has a part in it, whether as boosters, or sceptics, fundamentalists, or oppositionalists. For myself, a born restlessly oppositional critic, the current hype feels obnoxious. But as a mother I know I must reign myself in and be patient with the developing infant.”
